Last time I wrote about what settings should be used when hosting a game room but the question I more often get asked is what settings i'm using as resolution, scroll speed etc.
If you ask me which is better to use ddraw or ddrwapper or is GDI better than Open_Gl, I have no answer for you. These settings depend on the computer you are using, and you have to do some testing what works best for you. I use different settings depending on the computer I'm on. In this article I won't go into bookmarks since you can find already enough information about those.
However some other settings are better than others.
Resolution: When it comes to the resolution I think the original 640x400 is the best. You will have the shortest distance from buttons to the ground, which allows you to place buildings faster and Q and make tanks faster than you could with higher resolution.
I don't say that higher resolutions don't have any benefits, you can play decent with 640x480 and 800x600 and see more of a map and whats happening. However I think the advantages you gain are less than the advantages you lose when using higher resolution.
Scroll speed: You should turn your scroll speed one step faster than your comfortable level. Fast scroll speed is extremely important especially when using the original resolution. You need to be able to send your scouts fast and scroll fast from place to place to see whats happening. After you are getting used to faster scroll speed it will help you to control the map and after getting used to it you will see the improvement. Common mistake that "pros" are doing who have got used to the bookmarks is that they hardly scroll at all so if they don't have radar they basically only see couple spots in the map.
Mouse settings: On windows' mouse settings you should always set mouse speed on middle. This is because when it's on middle your mouse is accurate to one pixel, so when you move your mouse it moves one pixel at the time. If you turn your mouse one faster on settings then your mouse moves 2 pixels, which means you can't make accurate moves to one pixel. Makes sense?
Mouse acceleration should always be off, it speeds up your mouse depending how fast you move it. It makes it difficult for your muscle memory to know how much you need to move a mouse to get cursor in a certain spot.
I believe you should have have at least 800 dpi in your mouse, less than that your mouse moves very slow if settings are on middle. You can google your mouse model to see how many dpi it has.
Keyboard settings: Not much to say about keyboard settings. My keyboard is +10 years old and it works fine, I know mechanic keyboard would be better but I can't afford one. All the information about what hotkeys to use and how to set them up is already available so I won't write about that. One thing I'll say is that if you have problem by accidentally hitting windows key during the game you should disable it, you can google how.
