I've always considered people who started in 1996-2000 old school. In 2001 Game Spy Arcade (GSA) bought MPlayer which had been the #1 place to be for RA after Westwood Chat. Many unfortunately then quit and didn't come to GSA.
I started around late 2004 or early 2005 and was then always considered new school. I quit after 2009-2010 and when came back 2013-2014 my social status had been upgraded to OLd SkOoL. I consider myself and people who started in GSA semi old school, cuz old school already exist when I started.
They can correct me if i'm wrong but for example from Westwood there were still around ORA-milo234, ORA-kaka, Katsh, ORA-turret, ORA-boy, ORA-rock, Xeth, mafix, cousintank, cousinsucky, cousinribbon (aka Current) and some others. Then from people who started in MPlayer there were Sol3MAN, Mazell, Deztroyer (aka ORA-Dio), Krez, tbyte, eric76, dizzyman, Jazz (aka man33).
There were others who were around long before me but who I cannot place cuz im not sure of their origins, for example Displacer, Liquid, HITMAN, ANTMAN, notonrouter, megadeath, kicknass, carl, huejardon, ORA-sabs, Laddida, cousintrophy, ORA-sabs, FattyNoob, Nike, Taz (aka $h0tgun), Jackal (aka gawd) iSquishWorms, surfsup, tabo, tank, rg, lemming, Ra168UK etc . Anyway, many who started in MPlayer were already good when I came online.
Then there were the new school. Which was mix of the people who started in GSA about 1-3 before me or 1-3 yrs after me. To name some who started before me in GSA: FatherRavel (NastyNate), Cburr, Enginuity, macleod, naturalcibo, ReDuDe, Ifuccuup.
Ehy started some weeks after me and after that growth stayed low, maybe around 3 new players/year who stayed active playing. After us started for example, KeiserJallan, RomperDude, Sledge, RockPanjo, Nebosilver, Apicaso, SlicKRick (not sure) and DaRasta (who made Darasta maps) and his girlfriend LadyRasta. After GSA died in 2006-2007 and Kali became only place to really play RA online some new players started such as Yuz and Schmuudi (aka Funky).
So There weren't many new players and not so many players in general either, some played less active or played in different time. The lack of players, made it so that even if you were nubenator, you had to play in the same rooms with good players. No other games were up. This had some good sides.
You were pretty much always able to get a game, 2vs2 or 1v1, cuz everybody who online were in the same room. You didn't have the choice to spent first 2 yrs playing with nubenators on silly maps or play with twisted settings like money 99999999999 or with resolution 19388x78732, back then were only the original reso 640x400. "Watch and learn" was often told.
Youtube didn't exist/had just came out, and there weren't many sources to get RA knowledge, beside RaArchive, JCFarmer's site, there were couple others, which were more fun than actually helpful. The most of the old pros didn't share much with us new school. For example eventho I played in the same games with all older players when I started nobody told me about Q or Bookmarks. After couple months I had been noobing around I asked Milo234 teach me, and he told me about them first thing. Many old players kept stuff secret to gain the upper hand.
Mentality was different back then in many ways. Unlike now when people call everybody who semi knows p4 "pro", then they all played p4 but if you asked they said "avg" "good" "i'm ok".
The best players have always been good at tanking and if you couldn't tank you automatically weren't pro. Later after becoming good I realize not all of the mentality back then were good. Like if you jewed (aka base rushed) they might go "oh oh thought we seriously playing". Milo234 taught me very early that jew is okk. When learning Hjk6 and path he prolly jewed me 400 times and didn't stop before I learned to defend it. People who nowadays complain that jew is nub, don't understand that it's only nub if you cant defend it. Before Q'ing was invented (back in westwood) everyone just jewed, it didn't become "nub" until pr0s learned to defend it with Q and that's how Q tank fighting began.
However because of the mentality of the time was that tanking is the pr0 way and I wanted look good not listen jew cries or look equally nub by cying, it was easy choice for me, especially cuz all the best were tankers including Milo234.
Don't wanna make articles too long, mayb Part 2 coming out soon if wished..
