Practicing and playing is of course the best way to learn, but sometimes especially if you are new you should watch some games. On the other hand it's also good for "pros" to watch pros.
Newbs usually get kicked out from the "pro" rooms faster than a Swedish guys says "yes" to butt sex proposal, but if you private message to the room host and ask him if you can watch and learn most of them will let you. Just promise that you will leave if it lags.
When you are watching a "pro" game, first you should find out who should you be watching at, since most of the players in "pro" games are really far of being anything close to pro.
After you know which players you should watch try to pay attention to certain details (NOTE: a lot of "pros" should also learn to watch games correctly, many just watch games like TV but not really seeing everything that is going on).
1. Drive+Deploy: If the map includes driving pay attention how players drive and where they deploy.
2. Bulid order: See what buildings players make and in what order. See what buildings they sell and when they make more powers and new refineries. You should really write down on a paper some of the orders people use when you are watching the games first times, otherwise it's really hard to remember and often one mistake fucks the whole bulid up. Remember that bulid orders are different depending on the map.
3. Guards and Scouts: Keep on eye on how and where they send their guards and scouts.
4. Compare the players speeds. Watch who has the first war factory up and who has the first tank. What about the second and third war, is someone getting a lot ahead in tank production? Or who has the first Cys out, has the one with more cys also more war factories? Etc.
When I played with Milo he always counted how many seconds i'm behind him :D.
5. When to attack. Common mistake that I see all the time ("pro" games included) is that people attack too late. If you are tanking you should attack relatively early. Look how many tanks/wars players have when they attack.
6. What do they attack? Tanks, teslas, powers, cys, refineries or something else?
7. How they attack, do they use Q, do they use men? Whats happening in their base while they attacking? Are they fighting in multiple locations? These are the things you should pay attention at.
8. When to cy. If you are watching someone who is tanking look when he starts to cy.
9. How the game ends, how did winners finish the game? Why did they win: was it chinhook win, did they win because they had more v2s or because they pushed better with teslas?
10. Score. After the game watch the score to see stats. Who owned the most vehicles, who made the most vehicles is usually the quickest clicker :D. You can see all kind of other cool stuff in there too.
I probably forgot something but the point is that watching is not seeing and if you wanna watch and learn, actually what you should do is watch and try to really see whats happening and why someone is so much better than someone else.
